Sony's PS3 A Sinking Ship: Sales Plummet

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/siliconalley/personal-tech/2008_12_sonys_ps3_a_sinking_ship_sales_plummet_sne.html

Alone among the three major videogame consoles, sales of the PS3 are down about 19% from November 2007, according to the latest stats from the NPD Group. Sony was only able to sell 378,000 PS3s this November, compared to 466,000 last year.

And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3. Microsoft (MSFT) put up respectable numbers with its Xbox 360, selling 836,000 units vs 777,000 in November 2007. And Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii continues to dominate the market, more than doubling sales from 981,000 to 2.04 million.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.

The PS3's big bonus is its ability to double as a Blu-Ray player. Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".

The PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console. "LittleBigPlanet" has generated decent buzz but isn't a game-changer, and neither is Sony's new virtual world "Home."

There's really only one option left for Sony to remain in the game: deep price cuts, and not just for people with good credit. Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy.

Sensationalist articles.... got to love em (not). The PS3 is doing rather well despite its price point and has longer legs than any of its competitors so discounting it right now is rather stupid.

Edit: "but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360" bull****... Tell me, how is this even remotely close to reality? Most games are multi-platform and the PS3 has quite a good library of exclusives. Unless you are going to count the extra games (now outdated, and most not noteworthy such as COD2<<COD4) released because the 360 came out a year earlier then this statement is a lie. <br>

they ought to sell it for $249. it is too expensive in good financial times, now it's worse. having said that, I have a ps3 and I love it.

I think the same way Psingh, they ought to lower the price but I still think it was a better buy. Blu-ray, wi-fi (which is the only way I can connect it to internet), less noise and the most important thing when buying any expensive hardware being reliability! I would hate to have to buy a console that has a extremely high probability of crapping out within 4-5 years, even condoning the thing with poor reliability in my mind is horribly wrong.

Having both I have to say I love my PS3. My 360 broke in the summer and since i've had it repaired it has been switched on 2 or 3 times.

Always love the fan boys.

I got out of consoles market after the original Playstation (which mind you is the very first, first production line, on the market and still works perfectly).

I'm a PC man. There is something superior about the PC. Could be the title and game range (not limited by the controller). Could be the superior performance. Could be the fact that games don't cost $120 AUD. Could be the fact Multiplayer is superior on PC by a country mile. Could also be the fact all my mates have consoles and I just play on theirs.

Playstation 3 with its blueray and wifi. Xbox with its game range. Wii with its... ummm... homosexuality. PC thanks.

The PS3 sales are in fact dropping. This time last year, the PS3 was selling as a stronger system. Sony can't seem to compete with the Wii and 360 in terms of hardware sales.

Sony is losing enormous amounts of money on every system they sell. Everyone who knows how the console gaming industry works, knows that console developers don't make most of their money from consoles, but the software sold for those consoles.

Since the PS3 came out, it has held only a couple of the top 10 spots (if any) for software sales every month (sources can be found on the NDP web site)

The Wii and 360 have dominated with both 1st party titles and cross platform titles.

There is a reason Final Fantasy is coming to the 360, and it's not because Square had a change of heart. It's because they see the software sales on PS3 exclusives, and given the amount of money they put into the game, they would be losing A LOT of money by releasing it exclusively for the PS3. They know that their only chance of making a profit is by releasing it on the 360.

And I agree with Rzecz. PC Games >>>> Anything any console has to offer...

Actually Final Fantasy 13 Versus is exclusively for PS3...

In any case, the PS3 is becoming increasingly cheap to produce, it won't be long before we see them on sale for $299 CAD. My guess is that Sony will pitch a lighter new design (remember PS2 Slim?) to rebound on sales...let's see anyways.

I'm for consoles and i've always stuck with sony and it hasnt dissapointed. I cant be bothered upgrading my pc every year to keep up with the latest games and sitting at a desk with the screen right there infront of your face just doesnt compare to kicking back on my couch playing on my big screen. the only games i orefer on pc are RTS's

Every year?

I update my comp as often as a new console comes out (about every 4-5 years). And probably save money by having the internet, cheaper games, multiple uses etc. Even then all I do is update the graphics card maybe once in that time frame. If you buy a good comp when you update, you won't have to upgrade for at least 5 years.

The reason you update your console is the same reason you update your comp... graphics card and processing power. Go figure...

PC all the way as well. It is so much more useful than gaming consoles, I can go on net, watch movies, download whatever I want, log on to WAFF, do my homework, play awesome games Medieval 2 total war that I cant play o. consoles.

If you get a top notch gaming computer you wont need to upgrade it till at least 4 years. Computer gives you back everything you have spent on it by ten fold.

Shooting and strats on PC crap all over the console efforts. Sports, fighting and driving games are best on console and maybe arcade flight games (ace combat series) as well.

That said, I mainly only like shooters and strats anyway.

Anyone watch E3? Microsoft looks like it's coming out with something similar to Wii, only you don't need to hold any kind of object. It goes by your whole body motion.

When that comes out, you can say good bye to the PS3! wink.gif
