Poland backs Serbia's bid to join EU.

WARSAW, Nov. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski said on Monday that his country fully supports Serbia-Montenegro's efforts to join the European Union (EU).

Poland supports all efforts by Serbia-Montenegro to return to Western Europe and will discuss the issue with other European countries, Kwasniewski told a joint press conference with Serbia-Montenegro President Svetozar Marovic.

Poland is a country which Serbia-Montenegro can count on for help, said Kwasniewski, adding his country is ready to offer its experience in its EU accession.

Marovic said to join the EU is the only option for his country. He also promised cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

Monday's meeting is the first between top leaders of the two countries in three decades.

Relations between Poland and the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia remained cold as the two countries looked in different directions for political allegiance following the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991.

Ties began to improve in 2002 when Belgrade changed its name into Serbia-Montenegro and realigned its political allegiance toward Western Europe.
