FICTION

Rising of the Vlach peasants in 1437 caused the
Saxons, Szeklers and the Nobles/Magyars to meet
at Kapolna (Transylvania) on Sept. 14 of that
year and conclude a "Brotherly Union" by which
they swore fealty to the king of Hungary,
promised to support each other against the
peasants (Vlachs) and the Turks...

FACT

POLITICAL RUMANIA PREFERS TO PORTRAY THE 1437 PEASANT
UPRISING AS THE FIRST IMPORTANT DEED OF THE
WALLACHIAN/RUMANIANS OF TRANSYLVANIA TO REGAIN THEIR
INDEPENDENCE WHICH THEY CLAIM TO HAVE LOST TO THE
HUNGARIANS IN THE 9TH CENTURY

WHILE THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN SOME WALLACHIANS/RUMANIANS
AMONG THE RISEN HUNGARIAN PEASANTRY,THE VERY NATURE
OF THE CAUSE OF THE UPRISING EXCLUDED THE
WALLACHIAN/RUMANIAN MASSES.

THE REAL CAUSE WAS THAT BISHOP LEPES, BISHOP OF
TRANSYLVANIA, DEMANDED AND BEGAN TO EXACT THE TITHES
IN NEW MONEY WHICH MOST PEASANTS DID NOT YET HAVE.

NOW, THE WALLACHIANS/RUMANIANS AS ADHERENTS OF THE
ORTHODOX CHURCH WERE NOT AMONG HIS FLOCK, SO THEY
DID NOT HAVE TO PAY ANY TITHES TO HIM IN ANY KIND
OF MONEY... (see unbiased records)

FICTION

...during the invasions (after A.D.271) by Goths,
Gepidaes (Germanic people), Huns, Avars, Bulgar's
(Ural-Altaic people) the Daco-Romans had taken
refuge in the Carpathians and then returned to
the foothills and plains of Moldavia, Wallachia
and Transylvania when the marauders had left...

FACT

The standard Daco-Roman argument and story is faultless.
But one cannot avoid some immediately occurring thoughts.

"During the invasions" ( which lasted app.600 years in
Transylvania and almost a 1000 years in todays Wallachia
& Moldavia) Where "in the Carpathians" were the alleged
"Daco-Romans" hiding for so many centuries?
If they did not take refuge in caves, they had to build
very thick-walled dwellings against the terrible cold
winters of the area in question.
But then archaeology should have produced the remnants
of such dwellings.
In the case of continued habitation in such settlements
the names of villages, wells, hills, rivers, brooks,
lakes, etc. in the "Daco-Romanian" language should have
been preserved.
If the "Daco-Romanians" ancestors hide in caves, which
are quite numerous in the Carpathians, then their exact
locations should be given.
Romania has never published any listing of such caves.
And where are the excavated burial grounds, over almost
a millennium, of a whole nation? (A.D.271 - A.D.1242)

FICTION

...sporadic resistance (after the Turkish
occupation of Wallachia & Moldavia) continued.
Michael The Brave, who became the ruler of Walachia
in 1593, was especially successful.
He defeated not only the Turkish forces in 1595
but also the Hungarian Prince of Transylvania in
1599,uniting all three regions under his rule for
the first time.
His reign was brief (he was murdered in 1601) but
long enough for him to became the symbol of
Romanian unity.

FACT

It is true that Michael The Brave was a valiant fighter.
But it is equally true - although not likely to be mentioned
by Bucharest propagandists - that the elite of his army was
Szekely Hungarian, led by Szekely Hungarians.

It is again true that hi was at the head of the mainly Szekely
Hungarian army of Transylvanian Szekelys which defeated
Prince Andreas Batori, ruler of Transylvania.
As vassal of the Kingdom of Hungary, Michael had been
authorized by Rudolf, emperor of Germany and King of Hungary,
to take control of Transylvania temporarily, after years of
internecine struggle there.

The Szekelys hated the Batoris because the latter had taken away
their nobility and degraded them to serfdom.
When Michael become bothersome, Rudolf encouraged his
army commander, Baster, to murder him.

(Hardly anything illustrates better romantic Romanian
historiography than the role allotted to Michael The Brave.
He is supposed to "united all the regions for the first time"
which is untrue, because in 1699 Transylvania's population
was only fractionally Wallachian/Romanian.
Even if the Walachian/Romanian immigrants & refugees had
been in the majority, that circumstance would not
made Transylvania Walachian/Romanian, for they had only
been admitted on condition of becoming loyal subjects of the
Hungarian Crown.)
