Several years ago I was helping a well known dealer of WWI/WWII British/US militaria and we found several of these jackets in a stack of surplus British Police uniforms. These uniforms were part of a movie studio costume collection that this dealer purchased. The buttons were not police buttons but silver coin buttons that could look like police buttons on film. I bought one and tried to draw the dye out but no luck so I was one of those who sold it on E-bay. I am not sure if the movie studio dyed them, but it appeared to us that they had been used in old movies to approximate the uniform of the British police.
