The Canadian Armoured Corps wasn't created until after the war started. Canada had six infantry regiments designated as (Tank) units before 1939. There was, however, an AFV school if I am not mistaken, located at Borden before the war. The Essex Regiment (Tank) did adopt the black beret as did the other tank units, but they were technically infantry regiments until after war was declared and the Canadian Armoured Corps was created - I believe in 1940.
The Canadian Infantry Corps wasn't created until well into the war either, for what it is worth.
One of the badge experts will have to I.D. the badge - looks like the school badge to me, but I am trying to remember if the CAC also wore the RTR-like tank badge before adopting the fist and arrows design.
