Response to Symbols of Monarchy
Good point Alex. I don't think it is US influence though. Some of the ideas for the British badge did include a crown. The badge was sanctioned by the King. It may very well have been the influence of the RAF on the designers and the King that prevented it's inclusion. I think we just followed suit. I also think you need special sanction from the King to include a crown ie: the Canadian Badge.
As for the Monarchy. I am not sure about Kevin's past. However it is obvious that many of us on this forum swore our oath to the Queen. I am half Acadian and I still feel better doing that than swearing an oath to some idiot like Cretien or even Harper. These days, even swearing to the Canadian people alone has me thinking? Yes, many Canadians support our military, however I guarentee many more do not. The monarchy is a neutral entity in our Country. Withtout it, we would definately loose a lot of our character. If the British get rid of them, it would be a dreadful mistake. I cant see the UK without them, even if they spend a lot of dough, screw around and get pissed a lot. They dont just sit on a throne, they do a heck of a lot for the British people. The Country would simply loose it's magic!
That's just my opinion
