The book SCOTTISH REGIMENTAL BADGES 1793-1971 lists several variations on the Black Watch badge.
The variation with the E spelling is cited as a officer's badge 1902-1937 era, if it has a King's Crown. With a Victorian Crown, it is for the 1st (City of Dundee) Volunteer Battalion, Other Ranks, from 1899-1901 period. Or it could be for the regular Black Watch, Other Ranks, pre-1901.
What kind of crown, and can you post a photo?
