Arthur Currie held the acting rank of Lieutenant General, as commander of the Canadian Corps and after return to Canada was the first Canadian officer to be promoted to General. My understanding is that Frederick Loomis would have held the rank of Major General while commanding the 3rd Canadian Division.
Which would make him one of several Major Generals, but at that time, the second-highest rank among Canadian military officers, and a very exclusive club, there being but four overseas divisions in the Canadian Corps. It wouldn't surprise me if he was promoted after the war to the rank of Lieutenant General - there is so little online about Canadian military officers, would love to hear more about him.
Hopefully Roger has gotten you started on the info you need. Feel free to post any follow up questions if you need help with specific information. Thanks for posting the location of his kit - I've seen his photo many times and read a bit about him. Generals in the First World War get a lot of bad press, and have been maligned as butchers, but in reality they were for the most part professionals with a very difficult job to do. Canadian generals especially laboured under great strain, had to learn "on the job", and all had risen through the lower officer ranks and "earned their keep". It is good to see family members taking an active interest and obvious pride in the achievements of their predecessors. Thanks for posting here.
