Response to Carry on guys
Being a rather violent species, human nature naturally dictates that people (military or not) have a higher level of respect for those who have been placed in harms way with the real prospect of suffering a grusome death or maiming. This is why warriors, firefighters, and even UFC fighters are highly looked upon in society. There's a romantic element and age-old stereotyping involved as well. That being said, the young soldier with is Afghanistan, Kosovo and Bosnia medals will (9 times out of 10) get more respect from others (military or not) compared to the older staff officer with his CD and Golden Jubilee. Sorry, but perceived as shallow or not, you can't argue human nature.
