Blame human nature.

I still look at those pictures and cringe. We had a whole box of those diced balmorals in our pipe band kit shop and we took them to local highland games. We tried to flog them for five dollars a pop about 10 years ago. Not a bad price for brand new woolen hats. Mint condition - I can't remember if they had C-broad-arrows or not; I don't think so, but they may have had the later acceptance mark.

They went, as expected, rather slowly, maybe one or two hats at a time. They were in human sizes, too, unlike a lot of surplus. They were just too ugly to take seriously. I guess in the 1950s they were a novelty and much more highly prized.
