Response to Popular or pander?
Like i said, sometimes you have to bend history a little to get the desired impact on the people watching.
Many (if not the majority) of people are oblivious to the fact that we actually played a very large and crucial role in the Normandy invasion. Because of this little film, it shows we at least took part with a single landing craft, a tank, and a few paratroopers. If you compare this visual impression to the way the Canadian military is generally perceived in modern times in typically having numerically limited or 'token' participation in operations, this film does nothing to demonstrate our true level of committment at that time.
I 100% respect that this little drama was made to be more-or-less historically accurate. But, i truly believe the few D-day veterans we have left wouldn't pick it apart if it portrayed some larger-scale action that was aimed at pleasing the audiences. Either way, i do believe it was done quite well.
BTW- i wonder if Sgt Gariepy was really such a hard-ass as he is portrayed here.
