To answer the question in your title, I give you a most emphatic 'yes'. Politics has always been the motivator for warfare. However, we are talking about an extraordinarily large chunk of inert metal that was designed and operated as a sea-going vessel, which has no 'politics'. Steel does not vote, nor does it follow orders, nor does it care when it has been sunk. I don't disagree with any of the points you have made in your argument, but your arguments aren't on point. I see no value in keeping the hatred that you mentioned, alive by ascribing it to non-political objects. In the same way we don't call a MIG-29 a 'Communist jet', we call it a 'Russian jet'.
