      But yes, Doug is as usual correct. Some officers may have worn pips from an older unit after transfer, or simply due to unavailability - I've seen photos of the CO of the Regina Rifles wearing standard pip and crown on BD instead of the black on red called for by regimental dress regs, for example - photographed in Normandy IIRC. Probably wasn't much of a kit shop there to pick up regimental bits from...don't know if he was transferred in from somewhere else or what his deal was. Strange stuff happens, though, particularly in war zones.
