The ASL counters look good; I definitely would resist all the calls now for "full colour artwork". There are comparison to PB:HoD and other newer games as the new standard. The counters from Combat Commander are another one. But the watermarks and borders on the numbers are just way too busy for my tastes. The ASL monochrome artwork with one or two-colour backgrounds work just fine. The watermarks are useless information - single colours already impart the nationality information - it's overload.
Part of the whole pop culture notion that more needs to be better; like special effects driven movies that jam every square inch of screen space with CGI "stuff" that the eye can't possibly discern.
A classic look gets the point across without sacrificing functionality.
