Hi. I apologize for drifting a little off topic, but can anyone please provide me with any information regarding camouflage MKII steel helmets used by the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII? I am particularly interested in information concerning helmets that may have been hand painted for service in the Mediterranean. Thank you.
The Mk II Helmet was the standard issue helmet to the RCN in WWII. You do see some of the US M1 Helmets being used by the LCI(L) crews as these were probably part of the equipment issued with these craft.
I just got one today.
The original owner painted it to match his ships new camo in 1942, he was a gunner on the HMCS Camrose.
He was 19 at the time, 89 today......and gave me the helmet!

The Navy received standard MK.IIs in their factory khaki finish. My impression is that painting practices varied from ship to ship. If repainted at all, they were either repainted standard battle-ship grey, or like Jamie's helmet to match their ship's cammo. A common practice was to paint the sailors rank badge at the front. The practice continued long after the War, as the RCN kept its Mk.IIs well into the 1960s.
