I know that this will cause Ed to shudder since he does not believe in restoration of an artifact, but it is necessary in this case.

I have a No5 binocular that has suffered through the Hood plastic case which has eaten away the paint on the eyepiece covers. So the previous owner covered up the damage with some thick black paint which covered the markings almost completely.

So a little paint remover wiped that off and now I can see the markings and the bare alloy of the covers.

A little black paint has restored the covers, but how do I get the markings (previously filled with white paint) to be visible in all their glory?

I tried to fill the letters and wipe off the excess paint, but all I got was smeared letters and smudgy grey paint.

The markings are lovely, CGB 40 MA struck out and No 5 CDN Mk 2/4 and REL/Canada 1945 with CAL/ 1950 and Mil scale addition. Post war, these were used for M4 tank commanders and ?? (I hope artillery.)

Was there any other case used for these besides the Hood plastic case and the REL leather case?

Use a white crayon, rub to fill in lettering then wipe off excess. Works well on weapons so it should be Ok on your application/restoration.

OK I will give it a try. I've already got Crayola's for my granddaughter. Easy-peasey!

Try to find a latex pencil. These are used in forensic labs and I have used them on pistols to bring up markings - exactly what you wish to do.
