17 th DYRCH and D-Day

A bit of info about the 17th and D-Day. As a recee unit they were not on the first day landing serials as a unit, but many of the unit landed for two purposes. One group of the regiment acted as Beach Exit Recce Parties and were to assist in directing traffic off the beaches, essentially, traffic control. Other members of the regiment were designated as Contact Detachments, a back-up communications net for the landing division. In essence it was a shadow signals net that duplicated the communications network of the landing battalions and their Bde formations.
