Estrellita Montenegro y Miguel Angel de la Vega se enamoran desde su primer encuentro. Ella es una preciosa muchacha, rebelde y luchadora, criada en uno de los barrios más pobres de Caracas. El es hijo de millonarios, un joven que aún no tiene muy claro qué es lo que quiere ser en la vida, hasta que la encuentra a ella. Pero todo no saldrá bien, pues la familia de Miguel Angel se opone a esa relación, no solamente por las diferencias sociales sino por un trágico pasado que los envuelve a todos: el brutal asesinato, hace 18 años, de la madre de Estrellita por el padre de Miguel Angel. Por supuesto, ni Estrellita ni Miguel Angel están al tanto de esta verdad que con desespero todos tratan de ocultar, pero que se dará a conocer cuando Leonardo Montenegro, el padre de ella, logre salir en libertad y pueda demostrar que el asesino de su esposa no fue él. Leonardo tratará de buscar a su hija perdida para demostrarle que él no mató a su madre…pero cuando la encuentre quizás sea demasiado tarde, pues ya Estrellita habrá sido destruida por la maldad, el odio y el dolor de la situación creada ante el hombre que ama.

Estrellita Montenegro is an 18 year-old woman who lives with her maternal grandparents in one of the poorest slums of Caracas. She is beautiful, rebellious and hard-working woman. Her grandparents are fairly old and depend on her for their daily necessities. Estrellita never met her mother. She believed that her mother died while giving birth to her. Her father, Leonardo Montenegro, who she also never met, is in prison for the murder of his wife, which he never committed.
Estrellita falls in love with Miguel Angel de la Vega, the son of wealthy landowners, since the instant they meet. Miguel Angel’s parents are against the relationship between his son and Estrellita no only because of their social differences but also because of the tragic past that concerns them all: the brutal murder of Estrellita’s mother by Miguel Angel’s father, eighteen years before…
Miguel Angel starts a relationship with Estrellita thinking that this will convince his parents to let him leave Caracas. The game backfires and he gets Estrellita pregnant.
In spite of her pregnancy, Miguel Angel abandons her due to her lack of refinement and his lack of commitment. Without his presence, Estrellita suffers the cruelty instigated by her in-laws, and she is eventually forced to move back with her grandparents. When she returns to her family, there is a fire in which her grandparents are killed. Forced into the streets, pregnant and all alone, Estrellita needs to find hope.
All the truth will be known once Estrellita’s father is released from prison and is able to prove that he didn’t murder his wife.
Meanwhile in Caracas, Doña Remedios who is a very wealthy widow is on her deathbed. Her only wish before dying is to find her long lost great-granddaughter, daughter of her late grandson, Estrellita’s father. She needs an heir and wants to find her at any cost.
Coincidentally, Estrellita seeks a job at Doña Remedio’s as a maid, but it does not take long for Doña Remedios to figure out the truth about Estrellita. With some help from her sister, Doña Remedios takes Estrellita under her wing, transforming her into an elegant and refined lady. Estrellita will soon make her debut in society, but all she thinks about is getting even with Miguel Angel.
When Estrellita, now known as Paola Aldana, makes her debut she is courted by many men and among them Miguel Angel.
By this time, Paola-Estrellita has had twin boys, has become heiress to an immense fortune and Miguel Angel’s family is in financial trouble. The courtship between her and Miguel Angel is rekindled, as Miguel Angel is unaware of Paola’s true identity. Paola-Estrellita sees her revenge through as Miguel Angel’s parents ask for financial help and she refuses to help, humiliating them repeatedly, until Miguel Angel figures out the truth. Now, although he is madly in love with Estrellita, he only senses hatred. He decides to leave again, and out of desperation marries a woman by the name of Alejandra. But Miguel Angel cannot stop thinking of Estrellita.
Miguel Angel and Estrellita begin to see each other again, both being very much in love.
Estrellita finally tells Miguel Angel he is the father of her twin sons. Alejandra, seeing how much Estrellita and Miguel Angel love each other, agrees unselfishly to grant Miguel Angel a divorce so he can be with his children and with the woman he loves.
In the end, those who harmed Estrellita get paid back and the ones who were good to her are rewarded… she and Miguel Angel live happily ever after.
