Remember Cinema 70?

I just remember it was across the street from Montgomery Wards and had a giant curved screen. I saw "Close Encounters" there when it first came out.
What was the name of the multiplex theater on Platte Ave. near the Citadel seems like there was a drive-in theater right behind it too.
I recall the Peak and was it the Ute(?) theaters in downtown CS. Cooper 1-2-3, saw "Saturday Night Fever" there, actually had to sneak in with my buddy Jason as we were too young to buy a ticket to a rated R movie. heh.

After looking at the photos of Cinema 70......

October 1 2006, 6:05 AM

...I think that theater is the one I'm thinking of that was on Platte it says Chelton but I think Chelton intersects Platte at the theater, am I right?
So what was the name of the theater across from Monkey Wards? Memories are obviously very unreliable, at least, in my case.

one by wards (ua150) and cinema 70 was platte and chelton.

The arcadia drive in was behind cinema 70. It was torn down to make room for a super walmart. And teh cinema 70 is now a showroom for a motorcycle biz/sales.

Wasn't it Aircadia?

October 9 2006, 3:33 PM

Wasn't the name of that drive-in the Aircadia, you know, 'cause it was an "open air" theater? I remember my brothers took me to see a Sidney Poitier double feature there once -- "Lillies of the Field" and "A Patch of Blue" -- that I thought were both very cool.

Cinema 70 was a real nice, BIG theater that opened back when folks would dress up to go to a movie. I think one of the first big-event movies they showed was "Doctor Zhivago," but I could be wrong. I saw any number of movies there -- "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!" "Cold Turkey," Fellini's "Amarcord" ... lots of 'em. I particularly remember going there with a friend to see Richard Harris and Alec Guinness in "Cromwell" one hot summer afternoon. Not a great movie, but not bad either. But it was annoying that every time a reel was changed there was a loud "Pop!" on the soundtrack. We were about the only people in that cavernous space and, afterward, on a lark, I asked if we could see the projection room. The manager led us up there where we met the nice projectionist and saw the whole layout -- two huge projectors with blinding-white lights and sorta noisy when the reels ran. Behind him, arrayed against a wall, was a bank of what seemed like about 40 car batteries. Turns out they were off the power grid for some reason and were running the projectors off the batteries -- hence the "Pop!" every time there was a reel changeover.

in 1969 the only places i remember over there were cinema 70, a gas station, a 7-11, the aircadia, and then germers. (didn't they have the craziest commercials!)

Good gravy, I remember Germers!

October 26 2006, 2:47 PM

Where were they located again? My mother went shopping there regularly, I'm guessing for my school clothes.
Remember the Jock Shop in the Citadel? I bought my Olin Mk. IV skis and Caber Delta ski boots there in the late 70s.

I was looking at bad commercials on youtube which made me run a search for Germers and then I found this forum! That would be a true gem if someone had a tape with an old Germers commercial!

Getting back to answering your first question ....

February 12 2007, 7:12 AM

I do remember going to Cinema 70 Christmas Day 1972, and watching the John Wayne movie, Chisom...(why did I think this was the name as when I went to look it up, the title was THE COWBOYS!) The ONE thing remembered here was that Big John died in this movie...shot by the dispicable Bruce Dern! They said no one would EVER accept Dern again in any other movie...but that was not the case. Boy, did he play that part well.
