SSRI-lääkitys voi aiheuttaa levottomuutta
SSRI-medication may cause restlesness
The shooter at Jokela may have been using SSRI-medication, which is used to reduce symptoms of depression
Pekka-Eric Auvinen did mention in discussions over the internet that he has been taking one or several antidepressants belonging to the SSRI-group. SSRI is short for ”Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor”.
SSRI-medication amongst others was according to themselves used by the persons responsible for the school massacre in Columbine in the USA.
SSRI-medication is the most common pharmaceutical product in Finland for the treatment of depression.
-Their purpose is to elevate the spirit of the person suffering of depression. They relieve an anxious mood, says professor of psychiatry Esa Leinonen from the University of Tampere.
Auvinen had been telling his internet girlfriend he was sorry about his behaviour telling his mood had become hostile because of the use of antidepressants.
Restlesness, one of the symptoms
According to Leinonen the use of antidepressants only should not cause symptoms like those described by Auvinen.
-Some side effects could occur at the beginning of the treatment. At the beginning of treatment during the first two or three weeks there may occur feelings of restlessness. In the USA it has been said that SSRI-medication enhances performance. But there has not been any scientific evidence for that.
It has been said that the side effects of SSRI-medications may include nausea, insomnia, restlessness and increased sweating.
-Also connected to the medication is that some of the patients suffer from sexual side effects such as delayed ejaculation.
In Finland there are over 300 000 people who uses antidepressants. According to Leinonen 70-80% of them uses SSRI-medicational products.
It’s a matter of prescribed medication, amounts that are usually prescribed by a physician.
