Misuse of Antipsychotics Risks Weight Gain

"Medical and pharmaceutical experts are raising alarms about the excessive and inappropriate use of atypical antipsychotics such as Seroquel, Abilify and Zyprexa.

Designed to treat the hallucinations, delusions and other symptoms of such serious mental illnesses as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, which afflict just 3% of the population, they are increasingly prescribed for an array of conditions they aren't approved for, including insomnia, ADD, simple anxiety, dementia, and even disruptive behavior by small children.

Such off-label prescriptions have soared from 4.4 million in 1995 to 9 million in 2008, helping antipsychotic drugs to post over $16 billion in sales in 2010. The drugs' side effects include Type 2 diabetes and rapid weight gain of up to 40 pounds or more. "
