Response to I guess my main question is did Americans in WWI use French and British weapons?

They most certainly did. The primary automatic weapon source was France. (Brownings reach Europe late, and in limited numbers.) Field artillery (divisional organic pieces) were supplied by France. Corps, or heavy guns, were supplied by both France and England. Aircraft were of French manufacture. America's army entered the war inadequently prepared, even the '03 Springfield was in short supply, and in truth, most Doughboys carried the P17.
