The impression I get is that the chapter was written based on examination of photographs, which would have been in black and white, so piping colors etc. would have been hard to tell. It does, however, mention the badges that were worn, and some conclusion about colors that can be drawn from them — such as that the two men operating the 57 mm gun were from the artillery, and so wore that branch's badges and colors. All in all, though, it's a bit too much information for me to paraphrase here (it's a ten-page chapter, about half of that photographs).
