Any pix or other info on the RR Armoured Cars used in Ireland in 1920's?

Hi All,

With the release of the Roden RR AC kit, I was wondering if the kit is appropriate to represent one of the armoured cars used in Ireland in the mid 1902's? Are there any pictures or other references of these cars? What color(s) would they be? Etc?

Thanks for any guidance.

Hi!

There was an earlier thread here about these RRs:

Thanks Erik for the link to that thread. I did notice it after I posted my question (isn't that always the way?). But other than a reference to an appearently out of print book, it didn't point me to any references of the vehicle.

Anyone know where I can find such things?

Thanks,

Art

That's about it unless you can visit the Curragh

Unfortunately there has not been a lot of detailed reference material published on R-R a/cs and when you narrow it down to Irish ones there is even less.

There is a little bit on the preserved car here

and some more shots on this flickr stream

Thanks Aidrian

Thanks for the links. Is the current dark grey-green color and markings of AAR-2 the same as what it would have worn on the 1920's?

Thanks,

Art

It's probably close

If memory serves many/most/all 1920 pattern cars were originally delivered in "battleship grey" which seems entirely approriate given the RN's involvement in developing armoured cars.  To the best of my understanding this car was delivered in this colour and remained that way though the birth pains of the new republic

A Brunswick green shade was adopted by the British army in the twenties before bronze green came into widespread use in the 1930s, but by that time Irish forces obviously were no longer bound by the dictates of  the War Office.

So a qualified yes in that I think the colour is probably generally representative, but not necessarily an exact match ( exactly what colour is "battleship grey" anyway?)

I may be able to give you some help....

June 30 2009, 4:43 AM

Arthur, please email me (click on my name and it should open an email window) with your email address and I have some information from the Irish Military Vehicles book. This will be purely for your own research and not for publication anywhere; I am very careful about copyright, even if the book is virtually unobtainable. I borrowed it in England on an Inter Library loan and it came from a Reference Library in Ireland!
Adrian is right, 'battleship grey' is the stated colour and it is, I assume, similar to Admiralty Home Fleet grey. Whatever that was.....quite a dark grey, I believe, darker than most modern warships.
Best wishes,
John
