Dear All

I was thumbing one of my note books looking for Male No. 2341 when I came on this. Its from PRO file WO95/98, the 1 Tank Brigade War diary. This is from E Battalion's notes on 23rd November 1917.

Pte Dore was Ist Driver on Eclipse II (Mk IV Male) commanderd by a Lt Tripe. Dore was the only unhurt survivor from his crew.

"...at 11.45 am a shell passed through the rear end of the tank and exploded on the left side prcatically level with the front of the engine setting the camouflage net on fire. Lieut Tripe, Cpl Murray, L/Cpl Lewis and Pte Jacques were killed outright, Pte Innes, Pte Johnson nad Cpl Hilling were all wounded. I remained with the tank until ordered in by 2/Lt Fairbank"

Fairbank was commanding Eve, herself knocked out.

Another note had just caught my eye - 11 battalion near Monchy on 26 Sept 1918 in WO95/95

"A german counter attcak started [and it] reached the ditched tank. The Sergeant of the tank (Sgt Hatton) learnt that the Hun [sic] had captured his tank...collected his crew and charged, the Hun going out of one door of the tank as the crew got in the other"

Mike Cooper
Very glad to be safe in sunny Reading on this lovely June evening.
