All,
I have this pic and want to model this scene in 1/35 scale.
The soldier is obviously French, but the monument/obelisk/thing he is sitting by,
can anyone tell me what it is. And if so, can you tell me if something similar is
available in 1/35 scale. I have searched the web on dollhouse sites, diorama material
sites, etc. I dont mind modifying it slightly but would prefer not to have to scratchbuild
the entire thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Andy Tedtsen

A wild guess...

March 9 2012, 5:51 PM

just going by plausible timelines.
He's a Poilus from WW1 so perhaps it's a memorial to the Franco-Prussian War 1870-71?
If not, then it must be a memorial to an earlier conflict of somesort (Crimea perhaps)

Found (I think)

Hi Andy,

Not sure if you have the rest of the picture but I managed to find this which may assist with discussion on where the location is and ultimately what the post is all about.

There is a larger shot here

http://retro-vintage-photography.blogspot.com.au/2011/05/dejeuner-de-poilu-1917.html

and another shot labels the image as
"Lunch of French soldier in World War I, Royal place. (Reims. Marne. France".

(I did a search of google images under 'french soldier 1914-1918 colour' and it came up a few times there)

And.....in the centre of this picture with the large white ball cover, I believe (hope) is your lamp post!!!

(Probably doesn't help with finding one but at least you know what is looks like when you start to SCRATCHBUILD wink.gif

Sorry about the disjointed post but I copied and responded as I found images.

Cheers
Greg

I have been studying the 2 photos and would say Greg is spot on. The building behind has too many identical features for it not to be the same location, and I would love to see this realised as a Vignette ?

Mini Art

March 11 2012, 11:30 PM

Andy,

Check some of the mini-art range. Most of there building kits come with some form of street light which could be modified. A good starting point at least.

I'm not Andy but - -

March 12 2012, 7:14 AM

Hi all, I am a friend of Andy and will post on his behalf because he started a new job today and will probably not get a chance to view or respond to this. Andy and I have been kicking this around for a while now, and I had come to the conclusion that this was a lamp post, but Andy wasn't convinced. I was pretty sure, and now, thanks to Gregs excellent research, I am convinced. Thanks to all who contributed to answering the question. Andy and I will be attending the MFCA show next month and they have a huge vendor area that caters to the figure and dio crowd so hopefully he will be able to find something similar (if not exact) to use in this vignette.
Thanks Shane, Greg (you nailed it), Pat, and Paul.

Mike
