I do agree that this whole process could take place earlier to allow more time for family travel arrangements, avoid players missing more days off school etc ....
But I don't see how you think the regional tryouts & tournament is a better idea.
Who's going to organize, pick and coach the regional teams -
local coaches/associations?
This leaves the process wide open to all the politics that exist within and between associations today - coaches kid always makes the team, everyone flocks to the association with control of the regional team hoping their kid has a better shot (just like associations with PWHL teams today) .....
Big question would be how would you define the regions? GTA gets one team of 20 girls and Hunstville gets one team of 20 girls? Do you have to be a year-round resident in Huntsville to qualify or would owning a cottage give you the ability to try out in that region - lol? (please don't jump on this, no disrespect to Huntsville players intended)
Who hosts the cross region tournament - Elliot Lake? - then how many families have to travel? (no disrespect to Elliot Lake intended either)
I realize the point you are making is that its unfair to the people that don't live in the GTA because of the extra travel expenses, but I don't see the advantage to your suggestion.
You have all the girls in the same place, at the same time, exposed to the same conditions, being judged by the same scouts. Seems to me like the OWHA tries their best to make it a level ice surface. | |
