The women and men have the same format for hockey. In basketball they have 8 teams but it is a single-game elimination format. In soccer they also use the 8 teams/single-game elimination format.
I suspect that you would be hard-pressed to get an 8-team pool format for hockey given what the current models are. The only change you could liekly see is shifting to the basketball and soccer format if you want 8 teams.
