Putting aside the liking/loathing of the teams, which places were harder to visit, and who travelled best.......

Scum or Citeh
Everton or Liverpool
Birmingham, Villa, or Wolves
Leicester or Derby
Newcastle, Sunderland or Middlesbrough
Coventry or West Bromwich
Chelsea or West Ham
Arsenal or Tottenham
Millwall, QPR or Palace
Wednesday or Blunts
Bradford or Huddersfield
Cardiff or Swansea
Wigan or Burnley
Portsmouth or Plymouth
Oldham or Blackburn
Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham
Luton or Watford
Forest or County
Stoke or Port Vale
Grimsby, Hull, Scunthorpe or Lincoln
Hearts or Hibs
Rangers or Celtic
Motherwell or Aberdeen
Bristol City or Rovers

Be interesting to see how teams have faired through the decades. And any places where you came unstuck where you wouldn't expect to.

Tough one..

Scum or Citeh - Scum. Though got hoofed out of Maine Road during the 2-1 win there and had a few chasers on me
Everton or Liverpool - Everton
Birmingham, Villa, or Wolves - All but Birmingham were the nastiest, Villa game, Wolves more sneaky
Leicester or Derby - No 'exposure'
Newcastle, Sunderland or Middlesbrough - Boro. Once also bumped into their main men at Barnsley one year, they gave a few of us a walk, laughing at our faces as we turned a corner right slap bang into them all. Fair play
Coventry or West Bromwich - Coventry
Chelsea or West Ham - Chelsea. Though had a beating off the cowardly ones too. Chelsea always had numbers, West Ham were more choosy
Arsenal or Tottenham - Spurs. Though Arsenal had several results against them and still do
Millwall, QPR or Palace - QPR for travel, Wall for horror-show and Palace for getting me nicked there. Crown Court the lot...
Wednesday or Blunts - Blunts
Bradford or Huddersfield - Bradford
Cardiff or Swansea - Cardiff
Wigan or Burnley - No idea
Portsmouth or Plymouth - Portsmouth. Though again, got chased silly at Plymouth in 1984 I think
Oldham or Blackburn - Neither
Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham - Barnsley, every time
Luton or Watford - Luton
Forest or County - Forest
Stoke or Port Vale - only came across Port Vale, who were up for stuff
Grimsby, Hull, Scunthorpe or Lincoln - Grimsby. Heard lots about Lincoln but not seen them
Hearts or Hibs - Hibs
Rangers or Celtic - Rangers. Though never seen the green and white hordes of shite up close
Motherwell or Aberdeen - Aberdeen. A few used to come to ER in the 80's, used to meet in Harlequins
Bristol City or Rovers - City

Chelsea or West Ham - Chelsea
Arsenal or Tottenham - Spurs
Millwall, QPR or Palace - Pikeys
Wednesday or Blunts - Blunts
Bradford or Huddersfield - Budford
Cardiff or Swansea - Swnasea
Wigan or Burnley - Neither both shite. Numbers would have a bearing as well
Portsmouth or Plymouth - Portsmouth
Oldham or Blackburn - Neither
Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham - Barnsley
Luton or Watford - Luton, never seen anything from Watford
Forest or County - Forest
Stoke or Port Vale - Stoke, Port Vale were game but heavily out numbered
Grimsby, Hull, Scunthorpe or Lincoln - Lincoln, some game lads
Hearts or Hibs - Hibs

Scum or Citeh - Scum on road but city at theirs
Everton or Liverpool - liverpool although had a rough one at godson early 70's
Birmingham, Villa, or Wolves - wolves
Leicester or Derby - Leicester
Newcastle, Sunderland or Middlesbrough - Boro, nowt to report about other 2
Coventry or West Bromwich - Coventry got beat up when i was 16 at their ground
Chelsea or West Ham - west ham, chelsea were nothing Imho
Arsenal or Tottenham - Spurs always
Millwall, QPR or Palace - thought qpr were most game
Wednesday or Blunts - neither
Bradford or Huddersfield - neither
Cardiff or Swansea - neither
Wigan or Burnley - Neither
Portsmouth or Plymouth - Portsmouth
Oldham or Blackburn - Neither
Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham - neither
Luton or Watford - Luton, neither
Forest or County - Forest
Stoke or Port Vale - Stoke, early 70's
Grimsby, Hull, Scunthorpe or Lincoln - grimsby but nowt much
Hearts or Hibs - Hibs
Rangers or Celtic - Rangers, I despise celtic
Motherwell or Aberdeen - Aberdeen
Bristol City or Rovers - City

All my assumptions are based on my experiences not hearsay, some lads will have seen different things at different places, I once got attacked by a mob of chesterfield on motorway but they came unstuck when the numbers were more even, I also base most of it on away travels , at ER man utd, pompey and spurs were always the most game, away it would be man city, west ham and top of the list spurs every time.

Every team has a group of lads that could hold their own in small numbers that are equal either side, so no shame in taking a slap at any ground in those circumstances.

During the 70's from what I recall you more likely to get a slap from not showing your club colours Man City in 78 in the cup a prime example as everyone seemed to have scarfs somewhere on there presence, going to away games at certain grounds scarfs were kept hidden and only came out once inside the ground great days.

View from a blue.

August 19 2017, 7:35 AM

Hope you don't mind but I thought I'd throw in my tenpence worth, mostly involving City games but also a good few with Stockport thrown into the mix, as you may recall both Stockport & Tranmere used to play most home games on Friday evenings, so the weekend did very often start @ Edgeley Park, right here goes;

Scum or Citeh ........... Results either way and too many to mention really. One thing I do know is that I despise the fuckers much more than any of you lot do.

Everton or Liverpool...Everton hands down, in particular the Q/final at theirs in 81, never seen so much steel on show. Also got nicked twice on same day following a game @ Goodison, assault followed by arson, bad day.

Birmingham, Villa, or Wolves...... Personally Birmingham but as someone said Wolves were sneaky fuckers. Always loved going to Villa and never came unstuck.

Leicester or Derby... Not a lot to choose between them but the Baseball Ground just gave itself to a volatile atmosphere.

Newcastle, Sunderland or Middlesbrough ... Boro all day long, home or away, the walk from the station was probably the roughest of them all. Newcastle was tasty in the cup in 77, the round after we won 2-1 @ ER.

Coventry or West Bromwich... Probably Baggies shade it but Cov did bring a decent firm to MR for a cup tie mid 90s, they had a go in the North stand, not something you'd expect.

Chelsea or West Ham..... Chelsea brought the biggest ever away following seen @ MR when they won promotion mid 80s, a Friday night game and they must have had 15k there, they bossed the place that night.

Arsenal or Tottenham .... Spurs, first team I saw come in the Kippax with intent, mid 70s, they were right at the back and caused quite a stir forward when they piped up, got shifted in the end though.

Millwall, QPR or Palace...... Wall, there's no contest really, although I did get my silk scarf taxed @ Loftus Rd in 75/6.

Wednesday or Blunts .... Blades, never seen/heard a peep from Wednesday.

Bradford or Huddersfield.. Bradford, there was always needle between them & Stockport, can remember them bringing loads to Edgeley Park early 70s, in fact that was my first real taste of fv and it was a 2nd prize, didn't put me off though.

Cardiff or Swansea.. Cardiff.

Wigan or Burnley ... Burnley but that's definitely a Stockport thing, plenty of history between the 2 that went on well into the late 90s.

Portsmouth or Plymouth.. Pompey for me.

Oldham or Blackburn ... I'd say Oldham from my own experience but Bolton should really be in there and they would definitely top the list for me if they were.

Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham.... Barnsley by a country mile.

Luton or Watford ... Luton, very uncomfortable place to visit in the 70s.

Forest or County ... Nuff said.

Stoke or Port Vale ... Probably had more scrapes with these 2 than any other club, Stoke at home were a force to be reckoned with, loved going there on train as it was such an eventful walk to the Vic. Neither of these had any time for Stockport and always came with plenty of intent.

Grimsby, Hull, Scunthorpe or Lincoln ... I'd say Hull was rougher, Grimsby & Lincoln on a par I think.

Hearts or Hibs ... My only experience is of Hibs through their raggy connections, known for being tooled up round Manchester after their home games.

Rangers or Celtic.... Rangers, attended a few old firm games, last one was the cup final, 89/90 I think, Joe Miller scored the winner, the whole day was complete mayhem, felt more like 79 than 89.

Motherwell or Aberdeen .. No personal experience.

Bristol City or Rovers ... City.

Apologies for the ramble but it's rare to find these sort of threads knocking about these days and I couldn't resist.

Oh, nearly forgot;

Leeds or Halifax.... Had 2 of my top 10 days at these 2, the 2-1 cup win @ER was a brilliant day from start to finish, have mentioned on here before that I won the golden goal comp, £50, problem was I had to collect it from the main office after the game, what a fucking lively walk that was.
As for the Shay, late 80s I think, Stockport travelled there last day of the season looking for a win to seal their first promotion in donkey's years, can't remember the score but results elsewhere meant it was party time in Calderdale, mad mad night.

Thanks for listening.

Good post mate and a good read. You still go to Stockport? Went last year with a few mates who support Halifax and pissed myself outside when a young dressed County lad was giving it the big un and skirmishing when a car screeched up and his mum jumped out, gave him a bollocking, and dragged him into the car and took him home 😂😂😂😂 You will probably know him. Funny as fuck.

Not been for years mate, just glad I had the best years ever for matchgoing lads, far too sanitised these days, there's even women there now ffs...

As for the Stockport loon, good to know they are still churning the odd nutter out, pound to a penny he will be a descendant of one previous header or other, was a mad town bitd, often overlooked due to it's proximity to Mcr but very much a town in it's own right with a population of 250/300k.

Excellent post, good to hear a different perspective, those Moss Side backstreets were intimidating on their own. Interesting to hear that Yids went in the Kippax mid 70s. I guess they travelled quite well back then. I can remember them coming to ER 75/76 season, not with much intent, but a small firm of 150 odd. However they brought a lot more than we ever took to WHL during the 70s.
