PROVIDENCE — Vladimir Sobotka’s goal 25 seconds into overtime gave the Providence Bruins a 4-3 victory over the Springfield Falcons yesterday at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
It was the P-Bruins’ second victory in two games this season, and both came in extra time. The P-Bruins had defeated the Lowell Devils, 4-3, in a shootout on Wednesday.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 4:49 mark of the opening period, while on the power play. Matt Hunwick had the puck at the left point and passed it to Johnny Boychuk at the right point. Boychuk fed Martin St. Pierre, who shot the puck past Falcons netminder Devan Dubnyk.
In the second period, the P-Bruins took a two-goal lead at the 7:39 mark. St. Pierre held the puck along the right boards and passed it behind the net to Matt Lashoff, who found Martins Karsums in the left faceoff circle. Karsums worked the puck to the center of the ice before shooting it into the net from between the circles.
Springfield cut its deficit in half with a goal at the 12:34 mark while on the power play. Theo Peckham tallied his first goal of the season, with Taylor Chorney and Vlacheslav Trukhno recording the assists.
Providence regained its two-goal advantage when Boychuk and Sobotka combined to feed Mikko Lehtonen, who scored on a breakaway.
In the third period, the Falcons bounced back to tie the game at 3-3. Only a minute into the period, Gilbert Brule scored, with Trukhno picking up the assist. At the 12:04 mark, Peckham tallied his second goal of the game, with Tyler Spurgeon assisting.
In overtime, Lehtonen took the puck down left wing and into the left faceoff circle. Sobotka went to the front of the net, where Lehtonen passed him the puck. Sobotka used his skate to settle the bouncing puck, then shot it into the left side of the net for the winner.
Goalie Tuukka Rask stopped 25 of 28 shots for the P-Bruins while Dubnyk made 28 saves for the Falcons. |
