WORCESTER, Mass. — Ryan Vesce’s goal with 20 seconds left in overtime, set up by ex-Boston Bruin Kyle McLaren and former Toll Gate star Tom Cavanagh, lifted the Worcester Sharks to a 3-2 win over the Providence Bruins last night.
Johnny Boychuk and Martin St. Pierre scored for the P-Bruins, who rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final seven minutes before suffering their first loss of the season.
The Sharks took the lead only 22 seconds into the opening period. Jamie McGinn scored from the left face-off circle for his second goal of the season. Steven Zalewski and McLaren assisted.
In the third period, the Sharks took a two-goal lead at the 2:25 mark of the third period. Riley Armstrong tallied his first goal of the season, assisted by P.J. Fenton and Michael Wilson.
The P-Bruins pulled within a goal at 13:54, while on the power play. Matt Lashoff held the puck at the point and sent it to Martins Karsums halfway up the left boards. From there, Boychuk picked the puck up at the left point, skated toward the circles and blasted a shot past Sharks goaltender Thomas Greiss for his second goal of the season.
With time running out in regulation, the P-Bruins tied the game at 19:37. Boychuk took a shot and Greiss was there to make the save. The rebound went to St. Pierre waiting outside the crease and he scored to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, time was running out when Vesce, a former Cornell star, scored his first goal of the season at 4:40 to win it for the Sharks.
Can anyone tell me how a NEWSPAPER can write "Boychuk" three times in their article and spell it wrong the last time? Yes, I corrected it. How embarrassing! I can't believe that they speak bad English on the news and make typos, etc., in newspapers. Sad.
They did say that (and it was even funnier to me) and I was saying, "ha, have to have a former NHLer score for you"... but then when the game sheet came out he only had an assist.
