Four players two of them from Quebec on a roster that includes 17 Canadians, eight from Ontario and a broadcaster were being kept in hospital with injuries being described as serious but not life-threatening. The remaining 24 passengers aboard the bus were examined and released following the 3:30 a.m. crash about 80 kilometres from Albany. The team was returning home from an AHL game Wednesday night in Lowell, Mass., a 3-2 overtime loss to the Devils.
Police are investigating the single-vehicle incident in which the driver apparently lost control in bad weather, the vehicle winding up on its side and badly shaken passengers scrambling out of broken windows and a roof hatch onto the highway amidst passing traffic.
"We went from one side to the other and next thing you know we flipped," Daniels told reporters upon return to Albany. "We ended up on the guardrail with the front end of the bus still in the road on the highway and the other end of the bus on the guardrail. At that point, the guys were in shock, not realizing we were still on the highway with semi trucks still blowing by us at a pretty good speed. From what I heard, three just missed us."
