BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has placed forward Marc Savard on long term injured reserve (broken left foot) and has recalled forward Trent Whitfield from Providence on an emergency basis.

Savard is expected to miss four to six weeks with the injury. He has led the Bruins in scoring each of the last three years and currently leads the team in scoring this year, with 4-3=7 totals in seven games. In 2008-09, Savard played in all 82 games with a 25-63=88 line.

The 32-year-old Whitfield was signed by Boston as a free agent on July 13, 2009. He has skated in six games for Providence this season and has registered 3-5=8 totals. In his career, Whitfield has appeared in 177 NHL games with the Capitals, Rangers and Blues and tallied 11 goals and 17 assists.

Whitfield will join the team for Wednesdays morning skate at 10:30 a.m. at the TD Garden and will be available to play in Wednesday nights game against the Nashville Predators at 7:00 p.m. (TV: NESN, Radio: 98.5 The Sports Hub).
