As of this week, two American journalists have been beheaded on video by members of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).This barbaric act against two defenseless men who were not trained soldiers just shows us the type of people we are dealing with cowards.According to a Sept. 2 report from The New York Times, the family of American journalist Steven J. Sotloff, 31, issued a statement saying it believed the Florida native had in fact been killed that the video was authentic. This week the state department confirmed its authenticity.News about Sotloffs death comes two weeks after the video of 40-year-old journalist James Foleys beheading was released. The video warned that Sotloff would be next. The NYT report goes on to say that Sotloff was killed despite pleas from his mother aimed directly at ISISs top leader seeking mercy for her son, a freelance journalist who was captured in northern Syria a year ago.Apparently, ISIS is threatening at least one other prisoner and blames President Barack Obama and the U.S. military for the deaths of these men.In the video, Sotloff said before his murder that he was paying the price for continued strikes on ISIS targets in Iraq, the NYT report said.Im back, Obama, and Im back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, said the masked killer believed to be the same British man who killed Foley. It would be unfair to blame the President for these murders as our non-negotiation policy with terrorists is firm but there is a moral imperative to intervene militarily. With every passing moment, ISIS is emboldened to continue its evil practices. There is already proof that they have recruited young Americans for their cause, and they are burning up the social networking sites with their demagoguery, looking to poison the minds of the downtrodden. So what are we doing? Our objective is clear and that is to degrade and destroy ISIL so its no longer a threat not just to Iraq but also to the region and to the United States, President Barack Obama said at a press conference in Estonia on Wednesday.I hope our leaders will stop running for office long enough to work with the president on this. Regardless of your personal feelings about Barack Obama, we have an international crisis that wont be solved by playing politics and appearing on talking head shows to throw stones.First things first, maybe the world should see us stand together on something if we want to be taken seriously. People are up in arms about keeping under God in the pledge which is not going anywhere but we need to work on the indivisible part.Page 2 of 2 - The tone of the discourse among American politicians is not much different than what we hear on an episode of The Jerry Springer Show.We are a laughing stock.Secondly, what is our end game? If we dismantle ISIS from the inside out, how long will it take before succeeding leaders emerge and recruit an even stronger, more hostile group of followers? We are fighting an ideal, not an army. So how do we destroy an ideal? We keep treating the symptoms, but this seemingly incurable cancer only gets stronger and continues to spread farther into the world. Its time we realize that the world isnt our sole responsibility to protect. We need more cooperation from other nations including our Middle Eastern and European allies because they are just as vulnerable to terrorism. After all, not all of the so-called foreign jihadists are Americans; they are being recruited from all over the world.Lets be honest with ourselves. The world is a much smaller place with the Internet. Photos posted online in Cairo can be seen in Salt Lake City, London or Sydney within seconds.NATO and the United Nations are as anachronistic as hall monitors in high schools. We need an international coalition that will act rather than debate; that will inform rather than obfuscate; that will work together to ensure the collective prosperity of all men, women and children.Fighting terrorism is a worldwide effort not just an American effort. If we are going to a make change, it needs to be soon. The beheading of young men in the name of jihad is crossing the line. And at this rate, it will only get worse.Ponder that! Jim Brock is managing editor of the Nebraska City News-Press. p By Ed SymkusMore Content NowCredit is given, right at the beginning of The Boxtrolls, that the quaintly old-fashioned, stop-motion animated film is based on the popular childrens book Here Be Monsters by Alan Snow.Well, yeah, there were a bunch of Boxtrolls odd little creatures running around beneath the streets of London, clad in cardboard boxes in the novel. But Im not sure how they gained titular status on the film, nor do I have any idea why the filmmakers claim their movie is based on the book.So for fans of Mr. Snows delightful but decidedly odd novel, who are looking forward to seeing his characters and creations and enchantingly silly plots up on the screen, a word of warning: While there are Boxtrolls reminiscent in communicative skills to the Minions from Despicable Me to spare, theres no grandfather or crows or rats or Cabbageheads or pirates or cheese hunts. Theres not even a young boy named Arthur. There is, instead, a young boy named Eggs, who lives with and believes he, too, is one of the Boxtrolls.Im a fan of the book, and for a time while watching the film, I was disappointed that what I was getting wasnt at all what I was expecting. Until I got caught up in what I was getting. Yes, the movie is as far away from its source material as the David Cronenberg film of Naked Lunch was from the William Burroughs book. But what a wonderful thing theyve turned it into. The folks at the Oregon-based Laika, the studio that also brought us Coraline and ParaNorman, have made amazing advances in the art of stop-motion, the animation style that Ray Harryhausen pioneered in such films as The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts. Everyone and almost everything (theres a bit of a CG assist) in The Boxtrolls is handmade, with painstakingly crafted puppets, wearing extremely detailed clothing and accessories, being moved one frame at a time, resulting in smooth, flowing, natural visuals. But more important, especially for young viewers, is the story, which not only leaves out scads of established characters, but also tosses in some new ones. Young Eggs (voice of Isaac Wright aka Bran Stark on Game of Thrones) was raised by the Boxtrolls, and lives happily and simply with them in their big underground chamber. Eggs and his friends come up to steal supplies, under cover of night, but otherwise dont know the ways of the films Dickensian-era world. Up there live the normal people, along with the films antagonists: Lord Portley-Rind (Jared Harris), the governor of Cheesebridge, who only cares about the cheese parties he throws for his supposedly aristocratic friends at the Cheese Guild; his stubborn, feisty and sometimes nasty daughter Winnie (Elle Fanning) who craves the attention of her father; and the vile, Fagin-like Archibald Snatcher (Sir Ben Kingsley) who wants only to be welcomed into the wealthy circle of Portley-Rind and company but is thought by them to be no more than street trash.Page 2 of 2 - The plotlines go all over the place: Snatcher, with the help of a trio of goons, is kidnapping Boxtrolls, and has horrid plans for them that he believes will gain him acceptance into the Cheese Guild. If that doesnt work, perhaps Snatchers donning of womens clothing, raising his voice to a falsetto, and attempting to seduce Guild members will do the trick. Both Winnie and Eggs find their first human friends in each other. The Boxtrolls must be saved from peril. Will Eggs and Winnie be the ones to do it?As in the previous Laika productions, the film enters some territory that has dark edges, specifically in flashbacks that show how Eggs came to live underground. But all of that is balanced both by the nonstop goofiness of the Boxtrolls and by the gaudy, audacious, and comical performance by Snatchers alter ego, Madame Frou Frou (yes, Kingsley does all of that falsetto business), with a highlight being her singing of Eric Idles The Boxtrolls Song (No, thats not Kingsley singing). Its OK that so much liberty has been taken with the source material, because the movie is a true work of art. While the book tends to ramble, the movie absolutely zips by in just over 90 minutes. One thing they have in common is that both are fun and funny.Ed Symkus covers movies for More Content Now.THE BOXTROLLSWritten by Irena Brignull and Adam Pava; directed by Anthony Stacchi and Graham AnnableWith the voices of Isaac Wright, Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Jared HarrisRated PG http://www.oakleys.in.net After seven years, IA doesn't really care what frustrated neighborhood activists tell thin-skinned bureaucrats. * Vanilla Porter: While words like "vanilla" usually mean "avoid," that's not true with this rich, creamy porter from Colorado. The dark, malty flavor of the beer is well-matched by the subtle vanilla flavor, making this a great beer to pair with barbecue — something that makes sense given the origin of the brewery. This isn't a challenging beer, but it's something that provides a nice, sweet change of pace to try — not to mention that this is a dark beer that serves as a wonderful gateway to folks who aren't familiar with them.
