Just like to give an English perspective.
I grew up in the 80's and my image of America was all sugar coated sport-jocks, beauty pageant nonsense, but the good Doc showed that America also has a different more cultured / subversive (basically more interesting) side. He also showed that being patriotic isn't necessarily about going along with what those in power/Authority what you to think, but about what you believe is the best for your country. He promoted true freedom, and independent thought, values that seem to have gone out the window in these paranoid times we live.
And he did it all with style.
