Buckeye Kid
January 31 2006, 3:04 PM
Question : did more than one hull run as the Buckeye kid? I have a jones boat in resto that I was told was at one time, the Buckye kid. I was in fact planning to restore it to that look. Many features in the pictures are the same as on my boat. Please help if you can. steve jr.
THIS IS THE ONLY PIC I HAVE OF THE 5 LITRE "BUCKEYE KID".
HOPE THIS IS YOUR BOAT.

from the position and the shape of the lifting lugs, my boat looks like the F class boat in the other pics. the lugs, made out of 3 x 1/2 aluminum bar with rectangular cutouts, would appear to be somewhat unique. steve jr.

If you have a Buckeye Kid it is the E-class 5Litre/280
Both were built by Taggerts so should be very similar in hardware and outfitting.
The boat listed for sale is indeed the Buckeye Kid/Foxy Lady/Ms Toledo/Summer Wine/Red Hot.
I raced against it with the FAST TRACKER for 3 years when Randy & Carl campagined it as the Ms Toledeo.

A neat fact about the E-boat 280 is that Jim Kropfeld drove this on occasion. I remember he won at Fernbank (Cincinnati) in 79, 80 or 81.
I remember when it came out west in 1986 and ran Nationals outside of Eugene Oregon on Dexter Res. Didn't see it again until 91 when it was the Miss Toledo. Beauty of a boat.

I do not mean to badger this issue, but the e class buckeye kid in your pic is definately not the boat I have. If you look in Gary todds photo album, you will see 2 different F class buckeye kid's. My boat looks like the earlier version (parked one) of this boat. Even the lifting slings made of rope with the black tape on two of them, are still with my boat. Also, note that the boat is called the "buckeye kid IV". This implies that there are 3 previous buckeye kid boats. Does it make sence that I could have one of the earlier versions of this boat? I am told my boat was built in about 1976. steve jr.

Buckeye Kid

Gary todds photos are of the same boat. Different years but the same boat. In about 1983/84/65 in Guntersville Rookie blew the boat over backwards when he and Jerry Schiedt (Fast Tracker) got together. The boat required extensive rebuilding and repainting. The Formula Mercruiser sticker is also sort of a giveaway becuase that was only for a couple of years around 1984 to 1986 or there abouts. The Buckeye Kid along with the Fast Tracker were one of the first purpose built 360's not a converted 225. The Red Hot is the 5 Litre/6Litre Buckeye Kid and appears in Gary's Pictures.
Since the Taggerts did both the E and the F boats I would expect the lifting slings for both to look pretty identical.
