1960 Ted Jones 266 F class hydroplane race boat

This original Ted Jones hull is the F-333 with the original 1956 and correct corvette 265 fuel injected alcohol engine that Vic Edelbrock Sr. wrenched on in the 1960's when he crewed on race boats.
There is a ton of information and original engine notes and paperwork on the boat's website at www.aquaflyerracing There is also a small museum of spare parts (including a spare prop) in their original boxs that also comes with the boat. This is currently one of the rarest of all vintage hydroplanes, and I would rather sell it than watch anything bad happen to it at as it is in near perfect condition, has the best of everything and truly really belongs in a museum.

I may always regret letting her go.

The following is from the boat's story board:

This 1960 Ted Jones Gold Cup hull was originally from Huntsville, Alabama. The owner was an A.B. Treffer who had the boat registered with the APBA as the Water Flyer F-33. The motor is a 1957 Chevy 265 Corvette engine which was built for Durb King by Norm Berry, at Bob Schroeder’s engine shop in Buffalo, NY. The boat was moved to Columbus, Ohio and raced in the mid sixties to 1971 when the driver, Connely Snowden was involved in a fatal accident in Cincinnati driving a 225 class hydro. The F-333 boat was mothballed in Clintonville, Ohio for over 35 years by the current crew chief and past owner, Dave Nicholson. Dave then sold the boat and engine to Kevin Klosterman who then registered the boat as the Aqua Flyer F-333 in 2003. The boat was ran for the first time in Louisville, Kentucky at the Roar on the River event with Ron Snyder driving. The Aqua Flyer not only has a fascinating history, but the future of this powerful vintage boat also looks to be exciting as well.

Lot and lots of photos of the boat running can be seen at www.aqua-productions.com

Been around boat racers long enough to know the trade in value of any of their kidneys is comparable to a Yugo with 200,000 miles on the clock. Thanks for the offer.

I truly love the vintage group and plan on sticking around and playing with you guys with the Miss Mandella whenever I can. I will be campaigning a current GNH in 2007, and need to focus my main efforts towards it.

I placed an ad in Propeller today, but wanted to let this group know about it first. I am willing to help out the new owner where I can and plan on including the website, uniforms, logos and maybe even my matching 1/12 electric model as well.

All you will need is a fun posse and some methanol, and you're off and running.

Kidney

If it matters I am not a drinker or smoker and my kidney has never been abused by a hydro! That's my problem! I will see if I can sell my house. Lon

Is this the sister boat to the Gun-Shy F-90, which later became the Miss Peg?
My uncle, Ennie Argence, drove the Gun-Shy in 1960/61. I was only 10 then, but I remember someone saying the Jones built two boats that year that was just alike. My uncle was hurt real bad, I believe in New Martinsville, in 1961 while trying to set a straightaway record.

Old shots of Water Flyer

January 7 2007, 1:18 PM

These first two pictures are what the boat looked like in the fifties and early sixties.

This is one of Phil Kunz's shots from the Water Flyer running in Madison on 1963.

The Treffer family who originally owned her was from Alabama which is close to the Gun Shy's old stomping grounds. The two boats are very similar but I think Miss Peg is a few inches longer.

Either Phil or Jack Hines who owns Miss Peg likely knows more than I if the two boats knew each other on the water or not. Jack also knows the Aqua Flyer well and is actually who turned her updated skid fin idea into artwork hanging off the sponson.
