I purchased the Ray Miller boat and ran it for three seasons as Muscatel Marine before moving into the U-Boats. I raced against the Buckeye boat at the nationals and at Valleyfield, where Rookie was driving. At the nationals at Dexter Dam Glen Kootnie was driving and beat me in it- the bastard! Those were the days. The Taggarts, Joe and John, were terrific racers and had a great run. Joe was a truly wonderful man, who I got to honor by inducing him to come to Seattle so we could give him a ride in Slo mo shun IV in 1990. The Buckeye Kid was a great boat with a great back story, raced by real racers.

Joe Taggart

I lived near Joe Taggart in Canton, Ohio when I was very young. He got me interested in fast boats as his boat shop was next door to us.
His older kids Tommy and Ann weren't really into racing although Joe built him a 48 hydro. His youngest son John however made his Dad happy by getting into hydros in a big way.
I will always remember a quote from Mister Taggart when he sold his ice cream business in Canton (it still exists)
"When your business gets in the way of your boat racing, it's time to get rid of the business".
And he did. Joe was a true gentleman.
