Got out yesterday on the north shore. Had big plans to head out east to the Pipeline but had to turn around at Old Field due to 3-4 foot seas, would have been a long ride. So we decided to hit Flax and cranes where we got a bunch of blacks in the 3-5 lb range. Saw a few monsters in the 7-10 lb range but they were pretty spooky and immediatly took off. My friend had an eight pounder in his hands when it started thrashing and threw the spear, tough break. At slack we headed back to porpoise channel where we dove around the rocks and the edge of the channel. The vis in porpoise wasn't very good and there wasn't much life compared to Flax. As I'm heading back towards the boat I take one more decent, on the way down I see a huge bass just hanging out about 15' Down, I aim and shoot, perfect shot right behind the head. The fish went wild, I fought it for 20 seconds before I was able to come up for a breath. As I went back down I was pulling in my line I see the bass violently spinning and then it happened, my new Stainless Swivel tip spun right off the shaft and the fish took off leaving me with a string covered in meat... It was a nice fish, looked 25 lbs under water but was more likely in the high teens. It was the first bass I have taken a clean shot at and I am very disappointed that it got away. I hope the fish survives but I hit it pretty good. Anyways it was one of those days where the big ones get away. I'm going to be thinking about that fish all winter.
Has anybody had anything like this happen? I think I'm going to get one of those detachable heads, obviously the swivel wasn't enough.
