Grenade hurled at NC candidate, passerby killed, 18 injured

SRINAGAR, JAN 15 : Militants attacked a National Conference candidate for civic polls with a grenade at Alamgari Bazar here this afternoon. While he had a narrow escape, one person was killed and 18 others injured in the incident.
Reports said the candidate Ghulam Mohammad Hakim had filed his nomination papers and was returning his home after visiting Bagh-e-Ali Mardaan.
Ultras hurled a grenade towards him. The grenade exploded with a big bang injuring 19 persons including police head constable Mohammad Ayoub. However, the candidate had a narrow escape.
The explosion caused panic with people running helter skelter. All the injured were removed to hospital, where Nazir Ahmad Rather of Alamgari Bazar succumbed to his injuries.
According to a local news agency KNS, the Syed Maodoodi Battallion of Hizbul Mujahideen has owned responsiblity for the attack.
A CRPF man Ghulam Mohammad was injured in an IED explosion at Drangabal-Pampore today. He was admitted to hospital in a serious condition. The telephone lines between Pulwama and Anantnag have got damaged due to the blast, reports said.
Police said a girl Wahida Akhtar was killed by some unidentified gun men at her home at Dangiwacha in Rafiabad.
