Nine injured in Jammu blast

JAMMU, Jan 15: Nine persons were injured when an unidentified militant lobbed a grenade from an overhead foot bridge near Hari Market this evening. Most of the injured were passers by. A maruti car parked near the blast site was also damaged in the explosion.
Panic gripped in the entire area after the explosion. The shopkeepers and vendors of the areas besides the passersby ran helter-skelter to save themselves.
The big bang of explosion that took place at 9.10 PM was heard with one kilometre radius. The explosion took place during the power curtailment.
Reports said that an unidentified militant lobbed a grenade in the busy Hari Market near State Bank of India (SBI) branch here this evening.
The grenade exploded with a big bang causing injuries to nine passersby.
The injured were evacuated to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital where doctors stated condition of two injured to be serious. The maruti car bearing registration number JK02H/8787 parked there was damaged. The wind screens of the car were smashed in the explosion. However, no body was sitting in the car.
The injured were identified as Rattan Kumar, son of Nathu Ram of Talab Tillo, Ravi Kumar, son of Des Raj of Gorkha Nagar, Ajinder Singh, son of Ajit Singh of Partapgarh, Sham Lal, son of Parma Nand of Gurah Bakshi Nagar, Sanjay, son of Jagdish Chand and Ganesh, son of Guran Ditta, both residents of Hari Market, Dinesh, son of HN Diwan of Maheshpura, Padam Singh, son of Maan Singh of Hari Market and Gian Chand, son of Milkhi Ram of Purmandal.
Condition of Rattan and Ravi Kumar was said to be critical. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and carried out search operation. All the nakas were put on high alert and frisking of vehicles was carried out. The nakas were also strengthened with additional deployment of police and para-military personnel.. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Dr Kamal Saini while giving the detail of the incident said that the grenade attack took place at 9.10 PM and atleast half-a-dozen persons were injured. He said that the power was off when the militant carried out grenade attack and fled from the spot taking advantage of darkness. He, however, expressed satisfaction over the deployment of police and para-military persons in the area. He said that if required more deployment will be made in the area.
It is pertinent to mention here that this is the third grenade attack in Hari Market area in last two years. The maximum grenade attacks were carried out during power curtailments.
