Respected director Erik Matti admitted he had nothing to do with the casting of the upcoming anime-series Rounin. Well, that was no problem, especially after he witnessed how competent the actors and actresses picked for the much-awaited ABS-CBN offering this summer. Fact is they were good in martial arts—a vital component of the series.
"With Rounin being martial arts-driven. It’s good that most of its actors ay hindi masagwang gumalaw. They know how to fight, ultimo ‘yung mga babae," shared Matti in an exclusive interview with the Manila Bulletin inside his place in Quezon City.
He stressed out, "Beyond the acting piece, you should admire the way they deal with martial arts. We did employ a trainer from Hong Kong to help them define their specific styles based on their characters. But the thing is, you can see their dedication in perfecting their acts."
With a cast involving some of the most familiar faces on TV today, Rounin comes off as the first of its kind in Philippine television. It stars heartthrobs Diether Ocampo, Luis Manzano, Rafael Rosell, Carlos Agassi and Geoff Eigenmann, along with pretty young girls Angelica Panganiban, Shaina Magdayao, Melissa Ricks and Nikki Gil.
"Walang daya dito at sila talaga ang gumagawa ng actions nila," boasted the director who amazed many when he provided the Pinoy public the Bong Revilla-starrer "Exodus: Tales from The Enchanted Kingdom" which was a certified effects-laden movie success. For his boast, he was pointing to Diether who did a tumbling stunt that made him really proud. The actor plays the leader-role of a character named Cadmus.
Erik even singled out Rayver Cruz (Mythos) whom he said has showed deep dedication to work throughout the shooting. "I love the way he attacks his work. After finishing a number of fight scenes, he would continue working on a drama-filled scene na may iyakan. Generally they all care about the show. And they even approach me if they feel they had to do a re-take and make it better."
Other members of the cast are fight scene expert Monsour Del Rosario, sexy actress Aubrey Miles, young star Joross Gamboa, singer Agot Isidro, dancer Jhong Hilario, and the comebacking Ina Raymundo.
According to the acclaimed director of film fantasies such as "Gagamboy" and "Pedro Penduko II: The Return of the Comeback," this positive vibes from the characters is a good sign for Rounin to becoming a major TV success. Of course, other than his praises for the cast, he is also confident about the tightness of Rounin’s plot, as well as the efforts given on the settings and costumes. The anime series makes use of a post-apocalyptic, pseudo-world setting and proudly uses lean costumes as opposed to the bulky ones that other fantaseryes made use of. Numerous major sets were built during the shooting which has reached more than halfway of comlpetion as of this time.
He further assured, "We put realistic, not overkill effects and made sure viewers won’t see fake-looking swords and feathers here. I want to have a show that actually respects the viewers of such medium. And here, I am giving them something that’s well-made. Mayroong mga effects dito na ngayon ko pa lang ginawa, like ‘yung hahabulin ka ng road cracks."
Rounin is categorized as a drama-romance-fantasy series that presents an epic tale of battle between those trying to go up from underneath and those protecting their world above. Erik also noted, "We had this challenge of how to do this as totally different from those that were already done. I didn’t want to repeat myself in Exodus so I thought of the post apocalyptic setting – a war-torn industrialized world. The powers of the characters are essentially logical as to why they have them, and we really veered away from the bandwagon created by the Lord of The Rings Trilogy."
Matti was remarkable for his documentary-like mystery TV series "Kagat Ng Dilim" and made memorable movies such as the eerie "Pa-siyam" and the interestingly sexy "Scorpio Nights 2." As for his latest TV work, his hope is to make a change. "We have to change TV-making; and the only way is to give the viewers something good. I believe Rounin possesses the kind of effects, story, and performances that could really pass off as state-of-the-art and competent."

WHAT we are witnessing on Philippine television is an endless offerings of tele-whatnots. Teleserye. Telenovela. Telefantasiya. And now from ABS-CBN in collaboration with Reality Pictures and Larger Than Life, comes tele-epiko as we enter the world of Rounin.
The project then known as Mythos was presented to ABS CBN executives in November 2005 by Philip King and creative manager Rondel Lindayag. It was perceived as a very costly project. They have to create an entire planet from scratch, Star Wars-like costumes for the cast, produce special effects and other production values.
Casting immediately followed and pre-production was made full swing under executive in charge of production Deo Endrinal, production manager Nini Matilac and executive producer Joan del Rosario.
Rounin is an all star cast led by Diether Ocampo, Luis Manzano, Angelica Panganiban, Rafael Rosell, Jhong Hilario, Nikki Gil (who said she will never try acting) Geoff Eigenmann, Rayver Cruz, Shaina Magdayao, Joross Gamboa, Aubrey Miles (remember her?) TJ Trinidad, AJ Dee and Carlos Agassi.
This is a story of love among the Rounins, the elite warriors of peaceful Lumeria. It also revolves around the residents of two other lands, the warlike Helion and Vesta, a place of rebellion and lawlessness.
The story begins from a commoners point of view (played by Rayver as Mythos) as he searches for his father.
The production team from “Exodus” were brought in from executive in charge of production Dondon Monteverde, director Eric Matti and fight director Philip Ko. As co-producers of Rounin, their aim is to bring cinema quality production values and special effects to television.
Brick by brick the planet of Rounin rose in an abandoned cement factory in Binangonan, Rizal. A 44-hectare complex where 44 sets were constructed to house the scenary for Lumeria, Helion, Vesta, Argos and Iccara.
Deo Edrinal sums it up: “Mounting Rounin is like producing a very costly futuristic action movie never done before on television. It is quite an awesome spectacle.”

Taking Pinoy viewers to greater heights this April is ABS-CBN’s ambitious tele-epiko, “Rounin.” It boasts of technologically advanced animation and effects, unique plot, superb direction from Erik Matti and an all star-cast lead by Diether Ocampo.
Diether plays the master (Cadmus) who rules with wisdom, not force—very much like Diet in real life. The Rounin are the greatest warriors but love is their fiercest battle. What if like the Rounin, he has to choose between love and his vocation?
“Definitely love,” replies Diet. “At the end of the day, I want to be able to share my accomplishments—big or small—with my beloved.”
Isn’t he wary of the looming competition with GMA 7’s “Lupin?” “I don’t see it that way,” he says. “I’m glad the industry is producing more quality projects. It proves that Pinoys can create a world-class TV series.”

"Rounin’s" story actually began in November 2005, when writer Philip King and creative manager Rondel Lindayag pitched the idea of the heroic "Rounin of Lumeria" to ABS-CBN executives. So unique and impressive was this idea, then known as Project Mythos. Within a week, production staffers were in place. Days later, casting and preproduction were already in full swing under executive in charge of production Deo Endrinal, production manager Nini Matilac and executive producer Joan del Rosario.
An all-star cast is led by Diether Ocampo, Luis Manzano, Angelica Panganiban, Rafael Rosell, Jhong Hilario, Nikki Gil, Geoff Eigenmann, Rayver Cruz, Shaina Magdayao, and Joross Gamboa as the Rounin and their apprentices.

"Rounin" is Reality Pictures and Larger than Life’s first television series.
With the stars in place and co-directors Jerome Pobocan and Richard Somes in the prestigious "Rounin" roster, ABS-CBN started on the task of creating the world of the "Rounin." The network took over an abandoned cement factory in Binangonan, Rizal, a 44-hectare complex in which the production spent two months building 44 sets to house the scenery for Lumeria, Helion, Vesta, Argos and Iccara.
The stars were given a chance to build their characters with three months of training in various martial arts disciplines. All the actors cast as Rounin, including the Rounin-in-training, underwent three months of training in capoeira, muay thai, judo, kali (arnis and knife-fighting) and wushu in order to make them truly credible as warriors.
"Rounin" is Philippine TV’s first high-definition series. It was shot with state-of-the-art HDP2 cameras, giving the production a movie-quality look that is apparent even to the casual viewer.
Larger than Life was also tasked with creating the special effects for the series. To put it into perspective, the SFX team began creating effects for "Rounin" in July 2006. They are still working hard until today to bring an incredible and heroic world of love, sacrifice, and international movie-quality production values to television. That is the story of TV’s first tele-epiko, "Rounin," coming your way this April only on ABS-CBN.
A really ambitious and exciting teleserye to watch out for on ABS-CBN this April is "Rounin," which incidentally is being called "tele-epiko" because of its epic proportions. "Rounin," topbilled by Diether Ocampo, is expected to bring Filipino televiewers to greater heights of TV entertainment starting this month.
Certainly, "Rounin" is one of the most anticipated series in local history, what with its techologically advanced animation and effects, unique plot and superb direction from Erik Matti and co-directors Jerome Pobocan and Richard Somes. But aside from these reasons, viewers should also watch out for the all-star cast of characters that will surely make the series more memorable and exciting.
The Rounin are the elite warriors of the land of Lumeria. But although they are the greatest warriors, love is their greatest battle.
Leading the pack is Cadmus (Diether Ocampo), the master Rounin, leader of Lumeria. He rules with wisdom, not force. He was elevated to Master Rounin because he is the only survivor of the legendary Rounin circle that fought and won the great war that gave Lumeria ultimate freedom and peace.
There are five new Rounin. Juris, played by Luis Manzano, is the strongest Rounin, but his greatest weakness is love. He has a forbidden relationship with another Rounin, Aura. Aura (Angelica Panganiban), is the master of Aria (Wu Shu). In fighting, she is motivated by love: Love for the kingdom and her forbidden love for Juris.
Creon, played by Rafael Rosell, is the son of Xander, co–Rounin of Cadmus. He feels pressure from being the son of a legendary Rounin. He is Juris’ best friend, but has always resented being second best to him – in combat, and in the heart of Aura, whom he secretly loves. Leal (Nikki Gil) is the Master of Katana. A true friend whose loyalty to the law of the land is beyond reproach, Leal is a joyous person, which endears her to the people around her. But her cheerful façade hides a dark past that involves her true love and her obligations as a Rounin. Completing the circle of the Rounin is Venom, played by Jhong Hilario. A master of Shado, he exhibits sorcery and magical powers. His loyalty is not with the kingdom, but with Creon, because he owes his Rounin mastery from him.
Also fighting for Lumeria are the Rounin-in-training. Selene (Shaina Magdayao) has the makings to be the next master of Aria. She is the master apprentice of the Rounin school, which is why she is wary of falling in love with a fellow student. Thalon (Joross Gamboa), is Juris’ protégé. He is Selene’s closest ally, but is slowly falling in love with her. Mythos (Rayver Cruz), the newest student, has the natural abilities of a Rounin. His search for his father will lead him to become Lumeria’s hero.
Plotting against the Rounin and the kingdom of Lumeria is Vega (Aubrey Miles), heiress to the throne of Hellion, and daughter of Draco (Monsour del Rosario), Cadmus’ arch-enemy. Fighting in her name is Braulio (AJ Dee), her faithful servant, who is secretly in love with her.
Joining the good side is Kirra, played by Aaron Junatas. Kirra is an Enyo, a race of people who look like children, but are in fact, adults. Having the power to heal injuries except his own, he becomes instrumental in Mythos’ training as a Rounin and his discovery of his identity. Another character, Xyrus (Geoff Eigenmann), a former inhabitant of the criminal world Argos, is instrumental in the battle of a Rounin – Juris. Aside from this, he is also Leal’s true love.
Other key characters in the story are Deinara (Ina Raymundo), Mythos’ mother; Xander (TJ Trinidad), father to Mythos and Creon; Mang Elli (Ronnie Lazaro), Mythos’ mentor; Raysian (Melissa Ricks), a conniving Rouninintraining; and Naya (Agot Isidro), Selene’s mother who carries her secret of her daughter’s true identity.
Some special guests, who will be playing signifacant roles in the story, are Carlos Agassi, Steven Fermo, John Apacible, Mhyco Aquino, Rico Barrera, Cris Daluz, Paw Diaz, Dexter Doria, Bea Nicolas, Renee Summer and Owen Bowen.
"Rounin" also stars Emilio Garcia, Jairus Aquino, Sharlene San Pedro, Jenny Hernandez, Janice Huang and Juddha Paolo.

All the actors cast as Rounin, including the Rounin-in-training, underwent three months of training in capoeira, muay thai, judo, kali (arnis and knife-fighting) and wushu in order to make them truly credible as warriors.
..."Rounin" is a well-planned & well-conceptualized project, it promises to be a highly-entertaining, action-packed project with excellent visual effects, hopefully with a good storyline as well, and brilliant acting from the very talented actors/actresses that are part of it, we'll be looking forward to it...
