ONE of the more complicated relationships in showbiz today is that between heartthrob hunk Diether Ocampo and popular beauty Kristine Hermosa. The relationship, which began on the set of the 2003 soap Sanay Wala Ng Wakas, culminated in an unexpected shotgun wedding in 2004, but lasted just several months before Kristine filed for annulment.
During the period before the formal separation, the two continually denied their union. Many pundits and observers then wondered that if the two were really in love, why keep the civil wedding secret? Sometime after, on the gossip program The Buzz, the two finally came clean (to a point) on the status of their relationship and proclaimed their still-burning love for one another, though uncertain of the future.
During a recent press conference for their new soap, Palimos ng Pag-Ibig, Kristine and Diether explain, rather vaguely, the rationale for the wedding and split citing the chaos, uncertainty and yes, passion for each other that surrounded their lives at the time. Inaamin ko nung time na yun ang dami kong insecurities, ang dami, says Kristine. Ang daming gulo sa parte niya, sa parte ko, so dumating kami sa puntong gusto namin. Gusto naming gawin yung gusto naming gawin, yung nararamdaman namin.
Says Diether: Mahirap lagyan ng label kung ano na ba talaga yung estado namin dahil kahit ako hindi ko rin masabi na klaro sa akin yung ngayon dahil isang bagay lang ang klaro sa akin. Sa puso't isipan ko mahal na mahal ko pa rin siya.
Kristine acknowledges their wrong decision to keep secret their civil marriage and hopes to do things right by having a full-blown wedding in the future. Hindi kami nakapagsimula nang maayos, gusto naming maging maayos lahat, gusto namin na kapag kinasal kami yung alam ng buong mundo, yung maipagmamalaki namin sa lahat ng tao na asawa ko yan, asawa niya ako. Tapos gusto ho naming itama lahat, gusto naming magpakasal nang maayos.
Despite the unresolved issue of the true state of their relationship, Kristine and Diether have remained an attractive couple who have no qualms about showing their affection for one another. On the small screen, the two have reunited as co-stars in the new ABS-CBNs sineserye, Palimos Ng Pag-Ibig, a remake of the 1980s film that starred Vilma Santos, Edu Manzano and Dina Bonnevie. Vilma and Edu portrayed a childless couple who hired a baby maker (Dina), leading to complications and dramatic tension for all involved.
Diether and Kristine reprise the roles of Edu and Dina, respectively, while Rica Peralejo steps into Vilmas shoes as Diethers wife. During the presscon to promote the series, both Diet and Tintin, looking very touchy-feely with one another, updated reporters on the status of their relationship, recent rumors, and pinpointing exactly when (if ever) the future wedding date will be.
First, the 23-year-old actress, who was previously involved in a very public relationship with Diethers fellow heartthrob, Jericho Rosales, explained that her love for Diether has evolved from passion to respect and trust. I dont want to label our relationship, she says. Kasamahan ko si Diet, walang label; hes my kaibigan, best friend, kuya lahat. I share with him things that would anger a regular boyfriend, but were so open to each other, we share our feelings and past. We dont hide things from each other.
For now, she says they are giving themselves time to do the things they need to do before finally settling down. Were just giving each other space para magawa yung mga bagay na hindi namin magawa, she says. We just want to explore yung kanya-kanya, as individuals, so we can improve ourselves, and by the time we settle down, if its final, na tututok na kami sa pamilya, tuloy-tuloy na. Walang atrasan, wala nang urungan.
Diether, who has a child from a previous relationship, agrees. Masyado kaming familiar sa isat-isa, hindi na namin binibigayn ng space yung dapat naming gawin. Its not healthy. Nowadays, the 34-year-old actor-businessman-model wants to recapture the mood and feeling they both had for one another when they were just starting to go out.
Bottom-line, Kristine says, is that their relationship is open and that theyre taking it slow. Its hard to do what I want to do, what he wants to do, na alam mo committed ka. Maybe along the way he might meet someone, or I might meet someone.
There were rumors before that Kristine had become jealous of young actress Pauleen Luna, whom Diether was said to be flirting with. This supposedly led Kristine to be get mad at Pauleen and to watch her beaus movements on the set, particularly when the actor was performing intimate scenes. Both Kristine and Pauleen have denied having any conflict.
Kristine says that her strong feelings for Diether changes the way she views the past. All the time weve been together, ang dami dami kong inisip na, ito na yung magiging pinakamalaking kasalanan ng lalaki sa akin, she says. Pero along the way, what happened, because you love someone so much, hindi pala hanggang doon lang yun, kahit sabihan mo ng ilang beses. It doesnt end, if you love someone, mahaba ang iyong pasensya.
There were also gossips that Kristine was seeing Oyo Boy Sotto, her co-star in the recent Manila Filmfest hit, Enteng Kabisote 3. As she explains, there is some truth to that. Naging close kami during the last Enteng Kabisote, she says. I dont understand why its like that. Weve done other Enteng Kabisotes, at ngayon lang kami naging close. We go out, but were in a group. Anak nga ang tawag ko doon. Tawag niya sa akin Mommy. (Kristine played the wife of Vic Sotto, Oyo Boys father, in the movie.)
She says she cares for Oyo Boy deeply, but thats as far as it goes, and she cant help if he, or any other actor, feels differently for her. My concern for him is big. Hes just a friend, thats my feeling. I cant control how other people feel.
Would she be interested in a relationship with Oyo Boy? I dont entertain yung mga ganyang bagay. Actually, wala akong plano to commit with anybody. Aayusin namin ni Diet yung sinimulan namin, and eventually alam ko at gusto ko that we will continue.
Asked if there were any problems now between him and Kristine, Diether answered, Walang problema. Marami kaming na-realize mula sa nakaraan. If there is a problem, he says, is that they know each other too well, and just need some space. Were too close for comfort.
On the subject of another wedding date, with the possibility a September nuptial, Kristine quickly commented: There were plans, but its hard to make plans, hindi namin alam whats going to happen along the way. Itll come when the time comes. Says Diether: What happens with us, if we try to plan things, lalo na hindi tumutuloy. Minsan, mas okay not to plan, so if it happens, then its fine.
So it looks like the two are indeed a couple, but are free, somewhat, to see other people. But yes, they still care for one another deeply. Confused yet? Perhaps thats how the couple wants it.
Says Kristine: Ill stay forever here, dito ako palagi. Says Diether: I love her unconditionally. Whatever happens in her life, I have to support it. Their unfolding love story will surely keep fans and media guessing.
