Should any government give reparations and be held responsible for the harm (such enslavement, colonization, and racism) done to their countries? I mean be held responsible for their “historical wrongs”?.

"Should countries be held responsable for their actions in the past?"

yes,
it's the only way to be sure they are not only accountable to their people, but also it will help to ensure that that action will not happen again!

the guilty are guilty and only the guilty

yes, but only in the form of the government being held responsible but not at an individual level unless of course its the individual who has made the mistakes or the current generation who voted for them in and/or refused to revolt against the mistakes. for example george bush should be held responsible for his own mistakes and by not trying to remove him from power the people who didn't protest or try to influence his political downfall should be held responsible for him remaining in power refusing to step off the mistake course that sticking to is taking the world down, because they have the power to remove him if they choose to do so.

People forget, and people seem to believe what they hear when they hear the same words over, and over, and over!
But, give Bush credit for the statement "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"

Responsibility

January 5 2008, 6:18 PM

That is a loaded question. One would have to kow by what standard the review is to be conducted. I would not want the UN to evaluate any country since that is a corrupt organization. So, your question is rather mute.

Yes!Countries should be responsible for past actions. However, they should not be responsible if they have already apologized or otherwise made amendments to whatever offense was committed.

Governments and the officials that ran the government. For example: Hitler, not Germany, Stalin not the Russians etc. If you believe in punishing the "country" that is walking a fine line with UBL, who believes the people should pay for the actions of the government.

Within Reason

June 16 2008, 12:29 AM

Yes, Within Reason, For instance, How far back through History should we go back??? The Wild West and the taking Indian Land ? When Countries Conquerd Countries? Nanking Incident in China? etc. etc....Because so much time has elapsed and it would be Unfair to the Generations gone by who are innocent of these Events and who are honest law biding citizens of today, to have to be held accountable for the Barbaric actions of the Barbaric Generations of the Past?? Having said all that, I say we should try to make every effort to Recognize and Acknowledge our Forefathers Wrong Doings of the Past and "If" it is "Possible", It would be a nice gesture, However small it may be, To make some sort of Retribution......Patriot

you must be kidding

you must be kidding..pay reparations...if we pay reparations to blacks will they pay back the billions of dollars in welfare that their ancestors draw from the government...will they pay back rent for all the welfare moms who live in free government housing..will they pay a fee for the priviledge of being in the greatest country in the world... how about the mexicans? they say that they did not cross the border the border crossed them...what a distortion of history that is..they dont mention the millions of dollars that the US payed to the mexican government after the mexican american wars for the land they had won as legitimate spoils of war..or the fact that the comanche and the apache were the ones who lived on said land and they never got anything for the land but a bounty on their scalps....then their is the indian....they bitch about how we introduced them to alcohol and it was there downfall and many have died from it....but they forget that they introduced the whites to tobacco and it is a genocide on all peoples the likes of which alcohol will never top.....it is not my fault that my ancestors lived under the British and slavery was common practice then...whites were enslaved also...they were called indentured servants...many whites found themselves enslaved on ships..that is were the term shang haied came from....the truth of the matter is that everyone has a historical greavance in one way or the other....this nation was founded in 1776 and slavery was killed in 1863 less than 100 years after we became a country millions died to free the slaves.........do we get credit for that? or do we get credit for the whites that marched for civil rights for blacks less than 100 years after that...whites died for black freedoms do you ever hear of that
