There is some kind of range of genetical closeness where a hybrid could be produced with another subspecies. But that range is still unclear.
The BF seems to stand somewhere between chimps and humans in the genetical grid. So it is unclear if it makes it to the acceptable range to produce hybrids on either side, because that range is not known.
So canids have a great range, seing how many hybrids walk the streets these days, but that primates have a relatively thin range, since known primates can't interbreed.
Did I get it right?
