As I always suggest, who says these creastures are surviving? They might be in their last decades.
While my opinion is that they are much less numerous than a lot or most others believe, I don't neccessarily think they are almost gone, just maybe endangered.
Either way, my overall point would be that people seem to be speculating on population numbers, which are completely unknown, based on a big factor that is itself an "unknown", that being what is this creature's present status, thriving, so so, endangered?, the accurate answer to that would have to come before anyone can expect to have a reasonable opinion on population. And there isn't a known answer to it's present status.
