Toes...number of..

by Brandy

I just had a chance to read some of the previous posts discussing whether humans or a tribe of humans ever had less than five toes.

I had remembered reading something about this subject awhile back, so I searched the web and came up with this.

The following is from this site
http://www.places.co.za/html/zambmana.html

"Rumours repeated by 19th and early 20th Century hunters from the Valley spoke of invisible people who ran like the wind and could climb trees like monkeys. From their distinctive spoor which revealed a footprint very similar to that of an ostrich, they came to be known as the Ostrich People.

The facts are that they do not form a whole tribe but number only a few individuals belonging to the Vadoma people who carry a genetic deformity. Those who manifest it tend to have extra or joined fingers and often the foot is split lengthways forming only two large toes.

The tribe settled in the Valley from the east some centuries ago. Their leader decreed that they could not marry outside the group and so the genes for this defect were retained within this small pool of people.

Individuals expressing the affliction have never numbered more than a few tens at the most but, with exaggeration, repetition and time, a myth was born."

And from this site is a short quote referring to these people with their odd toes.

“The two toe tribe of Botswana “ an insert on the “Ostrich people”of northern Botswana."

As far as to whether BF has only three or four toes, I will only state...that they have remarkable abilities with their feet.
