Just a brief ponderance for any all night researcher(s)...
by Adrian E / SNW
For those researchers that get a chance to maintain vigilant observations throughout the night and until sunrise, have you folks ever noticed a consistency in a last call howl, as in a "come on home" vocalization about an hour or so before sunrise? It kind of reminds you of a steam shift whistle that goes off at the end of the workday, with distantly brief high-pitched responses from the vast surrounding forest, even the resident group of coyotes seem to call it a day as they give a few remnant yaps while heading southward towards the river. We know that the bears are out and about, we've had one circling us the past 2 weeks around 2am with it's repeated growly huffs and gruffs from the valley walls to the NW and SE. Nothing too aggressive though as it lets us know that he/she is watching, Grizz says that it sounds like a larger male. They're probably pretty hungry right now, so we'll have to curtail our regular wilderness buffets and barbecues, our hairy fellows really enjoyed the grilled fish(halibut-seabass-onions-butter) that was left out for them a few weeks ago... At least they used proper dining etiquette, as to not tear apart the ziploc bag of goodies that were left up in the tree for them. Well I tried to be brief, but just a few things that have been going on recently as the activity increases as the season progresses, take it easy and talk to you all later.
