Its possible that the half moon shape was the result of a small rodent knawing on that end of the bone. Small rodents, porcupines and such are the "clean up crew" for such things as bones, generally. Ofcourse, without seeing it, I can only speculate, but would be comfortable in attributing the shape to rodent activity.
