The Egyptians.

Were the first to play with the stars, then the Babylonians, (Who probably accomplished the most factual conclusions) and then the Greeks, who with the prior knowledge of the past two, really made some great forward progress with Astronomy.

Pretty amazing when you think of what little technology they had for studying.

Then the Romans came along and started playing with calendar and screwed everything up.

Every wonder why December (Deca as in 10) is the 12th month, November (novem as in 9) is 11th, October (Oct as in 8 )is the 10th and September (Septem as in 7) is the 9th month? Well they all got pushed up two months and we owe it all to the Romans. Julius Caesar decided to try and tweak the calendar by adding two months. "July" after himself, and a month that was later renamed "August" after his predecessor, Emperor Augustus.

Sorry for the off topic post, but Egyptology is a hobby of mine and I could talk about it all day.
(Even more than Bigfoot, as the photos are much more clearer...LOL)
